		<description>Designing the layout of Jack Germain's Fall 2013/Winter 2014 look book was by far one of the most fun print projects I have done in a while. Her handbags are all eye candy and I loved the chance to see what is new for next fall and winter.

Jack was great to work with because she has a particularly clean and modern aesthetic while still loving feminine detail. Jack really likes script in her books but was also open to having some big bold typography to contrast the feminine script. The smoke surrounding the bags visually rhymes with the script and pulls the book together. The photos were taken by Nate Boguszewski.

		<description>This video and poster were created in my Typography III course. During this course we had the opportunity to work with Pittsburgh Action Against Rape (PAAR). PAAR asked our class to design pieces that focused on acquaintance rape on college campuses and the role that alcohol plays in acquaintance rape. The deliverables that I designed for PAAR were a video and a poster.

Working with PAAR was so fulfilling, but at the same time very challenging. Rape is already a topic that is taboo and avoided in public discourse, but then to talk about rape on college campuses, and alcohol becomes even more difficult, especially as a student. It is difficult to craft a message to your peers that is not accusing anyone, but at the same time, isn't victim blaming. This really made me aware of how sensitive we have to be as communication designers, but also not afraid to tackle the most difficult topics.

 KNOW/NO from Lena Eva on Vimeo.

&#60;img src="http://payload125.cargocollective.com/1/5/181405/4802670/paar.final.poster_905.jpg" width="905" height="603" width_o="2048" height_o="1365" src_o="http://payload125.cargocollective.com/1/5/181405/4802670/paar.final.poster_o.jpg" data-mid="25645770"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Process

Throughout my process for my work with PAAR, I was very concerned with the color communication of the piece. I wanted the color to create an optical sensation that made the viewer feel tension and confusion.

I experimented a lot and decided that using the theory of simultaneous contrast would be the best way of making people visually uncomfortable, while at the same time drawing them into the poster. I did a lot of test prints to make sure I was executing the color precisely.

		<description>"Willing to Change... Photo-Essays of Motherhood, Addiction, Recovery, and Triumph" is a project that I had the pleasure to see through every step of the design process and is one of the most rewarding projects that I have ever worked on. In the Spring of 2012 I had the opportunity to be in the Photography and Family class at Carnegie Mellon School of Design, taught by Professor Charlee Brodsky. In the class we got to photograph and interview mothers and their children at Sojourner House MOMS, an organization that provides residential treatment for drug and alcohol addiction.

After completing the course, Mimi Weber and I had received a grant from the Fine Foundation to design a book that put together the stories and photographs that the women shared with us. Over the course of the sumer we created a system for the book and organized it into four photo-essays, each telling a unique, personal story of triumph over addiction.

What I loved about this project is that I had the opportunity to experience book design in every step of the process. Working on a large typographical and color communication system for the book, and laying out each and every one of the 160 pages with my partner was so fulfilling. The generous grant from the Fine Foundation paid for us to get copies of the book printed for the Sojourner House so that they can use the book as anecdotal evidence of the life changing work happening there. "Willing to Change..." was a challenge when it came to communication design because we were dealing with material that was particularly sensitive and somewhat political. Discussing the not so glamourous topics of intergenerational poverty and addiction is a real design challenge, but this book boldly tackles these topics and I am proud to have worked on it.

Some of the main themes that are explored are personal history, obsession, health, the millennial female, and the subject-object problem.

		<description>Colloquy is a research application that helps researchers facilitate conversations through the physical exploration of color spaces. Colloquy offers and intuitive platform for participants to begin to verbalize introspection, yielding insights undiscovered through conventional interview methods. The colors created are not meant to be prescriptive, but serve purely as a conversation catalyst. Colloquy also has recording capabilities so that researchers can document conversations for later analysis.

Colloquy came out of Wonderlab, a lab in Senior Studio at Carnegie Mellon University and is a collaboration between Eunice S. Chung, Jonathan Ota, and Lena E. Tesone.

		<description>PeachBuzz is a system that facilitates conversations about health, puberty, and sexuality between parents and daughters. The project came out of came a couse called Design and Policy for Humanitarian Impact at Carnegie Mellon University where small groups had to tackle wicked problems. I had the pleasure of working with Sarah Gorman, Sarah Read and Catherine Carlson, and the wicked problem that my group looked at was health care, and specifically women's health.

The scope women's health is enormous, so a particular problem that we identified was the communication and information around sex education. We asked the question, "How do girl's get information about their health and sexuality?" and worked from there.
